Operation Gorilla Family is a vital community and school initiative designed to support families and senior citizens within our school and local area. This project provides essential items such as food, hygiene products, paper supplies, Christmas gifts for children, gift cards, and other necessities.

The initiative began when our Parents as Teachers Coordinator identified a significant need among single, struggling parents. A school-wide collection for food and baby supplies was organized, benefiting these families while surplus items were donated to the food bank in Abilene. Today, the district serves over 40 families and 20 senior citizens, with nominations coming from both staff and community members. Remarkably, many recipients have transitioned to givers as their circumstances improve.

DS&O Rural Cooperative manages the Angel Tree, where community members adopt tags to provide gifts for children.

Adoption of Families: Visitors can select tags from the Angel Tree that represent children in need. Each tag includes details such as the child's age and approximate size, helping donors choose suitable gifts.

Gift Suggestions: Tags will offer some guidance, but donors are encouraged to select gifts that are thoughtful and align with the child's interests. Common gift ideas include toys, clothing, books, and games.

Return of Gifts: All gifts should be returned to DS&O Electric by December 15, 2025.

Gift cards from local grocery stores are purchased, and our FCCLA class prepares frozen meals to include in the packages. Each year, the project introduces new elements, and as resources allow, the list of families and seniors served continues to expand. Students play an active role in sorting and packing items, while high school students deliver them to seniors and families, who can also pick up their items at our bus barn. If transportation is an issue, staff members coordinate deliveries.

Support from local churches and the Cities of Solomon and New Cambria reinforces our efforts, particularly through the Stuff the Bus Collection. This project has become one of our most rewarding endeavors, fostering community spirit and collaboration.

If you know of a family or senior citizen that could use this support – please contact the District Office – 785-655-2541 or any school staff member so we can make contacts. If you would like to contribute to support this mission – please do the same. It takes the whole village and we are lucky to live in this village!!!!!
